I've seen parts of the original, but not all of it. It's weird that it made so much money and nobody talks about how amazing it was. It seems to be a pretty standard 'white savior' movie with not-particularly-good scifi trappings.

Not interested in any of them. I could rewatch Dances With Wolves or Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves or Waterworld or The Postman or try out McFarland, USA - which I haven't seen but I assume Kevin Costner's character once again uses his racial/civilizational superiority to guide some marginalized locals to a better future.

Wait... is Kevin Costner in the newest Avatar movie? Maybe it's good...

Is very good at his job, for even if the story is meh, he does film shots to have maximum emotional impact even if the story is meh. Likewise he knows what story beats need to be in there, what story beats to take out, and to provide just enough material but no excess fat to get the job done.

Kind of like S Spielberg in a way, but at the same time I can more easily point out Steve’s excesses.

But yeah Avatar may be 2008 or 2025 but in some ways it feels 1980s and 1990s in style. Or perhaps 1880s since it is the lost world genre like King Solomon Mines by Haggard or Edgar Rice Burroughs John Carter of Mars / Tarzan from the 1930s. Pure pulp that leaves no trace like taco bell.
