Fair enough, as far as the legal part goes. Legolas Send a noteboard - 10/01/2026 09:55:31 PM

View original postYeah, in 2010 the State of Arizona tried to enforce immigration law and the Obama administration took them to court. The Supreme Court decided the matter in Obama's favor: When it comes to immigration law, the feds are in charge.

View original postWhen the Left was in charge, supremacy of the feds is what they wanted, and they got it. Now that they're not in charge, I guess they're going to need another Supreme Court win. Good luck with that. Their recalcitrance on illegal immigration enforcement got us two Trump Administrations and a rightwing majority in the Supreme Court.

Though obviously the reality of illegal immigration policies and enforcement over the past few decades has been rather more nuanced and less 'Left v Right' than the political rhetoric about it in election campaigns on both sides - for instance, the big bipartisan immigration reform proposal of the 'Gang of Eight' back in 2013 (which I was reminded just now included Marco Rubio as a cosponsor), which passed the Senate with a large bipartisan majority though the Republicans blocked it in the House.

But as for how the US got Trump administrations as opposed to Republican ones, and this utter degradation beyond repair of the Republican party, the Republicans only have themselves/their voters to blame for that.
