Perhaps you are too young to remember the Senate bombing in 1983. The Armed Resistance Unit, a Maoist insurgency group, claimed responsibility, stating it was an attempt to assassinate Republican Senators who supported the invasion of Grenada.. Five members were caught, tried and convicted. Two were already serving time for other attacks, Linda Sue Evans and Susan Rosenberg. They were both pardoned by President Bill Clinton by having their sentences commuted to time served.
So while I didn't support the actions on January 6th, nor their pardons, both were hardly unprecedented.
