I have to disagree, I think this is likely a big deal
Isaac Send a noteboard - 11/04/2011 10:49:02 PM
Sorry, I meant to go over this more but ? hadn't answered at the time and then I came down with a monster head cold. I think its also worth noting that one of the occasions that just got cited in the back and forth on this was also run by Kronin, with fistofpainx being the RBer but DK and Yuna getting singled out for it. I remember that quite well since Yuna and fist were my DF allies at the time. Another game in which gender matched almost across the board was game 8, where the only crossdresser was the Aes Sedai, I'd made everyone the gender appropriate to them to avoid pronoun confusion and shoe-horned a mask of mirrors in on the AS. That was open and deliberate gender-matching yet one player still wasn't and not as a red herring. I think we have to assume this is also not a coincidence, that characters were assigned to players. The statistical odds of both DK and Yuna getting female characters when there are apparently only 3/13 of them is rather remote, it is far more likely then that Kronin picked character to match gender, there's ample precedent for that just not typically when they are named characters. It would be pretty easy for someone familiar with Greek mythology/history to pick an example appropriate to character and role power or not to even worry about role power to character - so this is obviously something will need to explore. As for Beet being a gal, we have a few scenarios to account for this:
1) He's lying - improbable IMHO as he asked the original question and answered first, but more probable than pure random really
2) It really was random - improbable, but the improbable occurs quite regularly, stick 32 people in isolation with a coin, have them flip it 5 times, and odds are 1 of them will get all heads and another all tails and both will assume that the coin was rigged, the other people who flipped it will not. We are 13 in number, if we each had to flip a coin 4 times its better than even odds one or more of us would get all heads or all tails.
3) Kronin genuinely made a mistake - Players screws up gender all the time, and its not like gender is a particularly noticeable quality in our writings. Dan's ID as 'beetnemesis' is hardly gender indicative afterall.
4) Kronin made a different mistake - lots of tiny oops moment could cause this event, including that roles, or some roles, were gender specific and random, and vanillas weren't, so say Beet and Yuna both randomly got female roled characters and DK got a vanilla and was assigned female. A reasonable probability arising from a non-critical error and more probable than 1 or 2 combined IMO.
5) There is no mistake it's a red herring - Beet was made female while everyone else was gender-identical to insert confusion, there is ample precedent for that.
6) There is no mistake, Beet's gender is important - Let's look at precedent. Game 8 had both female players as female - DK and Yuna again in this case - because gender didn't matter, and all males appeared male, the lone exception was the AS player because the theme placed that restriction, we'd seen that regularly in WoT themes, the question then is why is Beet's character restricted to being female while apparently everyone else was left open, though more likely others were restricted too but the Greek myths and player roster both bias strongly male and they aren't noticeable.
