Hm. OK, without spoilers, here's some background information

Or rather, here's the possible "situation."
Some humans are born able to do magic. Pretty standard set-up, seems to be genetic, show signs at puberty, can do some stuff on your own but really you need training to really hone your skill and get good at stuff.
It's a Fantasy Kitchen Sink- it seems like most monsters are real, and our myths tend to have a grain of truth. However, the various supernatural creatures tend to lie low, because, well, there are a lot of us. They tend to look down on humans, but a pitchfork-wielding mob is even worse when the mob has machine guns.
So, there's the White Council- that's a group of human mages that operates as kind of a fraternity. There are only 7 Laws of Magic- don't kill, don't invade someone's mind, don't make anyone your slave, don't change the shape of another, don't contact Eldritch Abominations, don't raise anyone from the dead, don't time travel.
The reason there are these laws is that black magic tends to act like the Dark Side of the force- even if you use it for a good cause, it tends to be addicting, and you're much more likely to use it for a non-justified reason in the future. Hence why we have a contingent of Wardens threatening all of us- they're the paramilitary arm of the Council, but they're not very large and have to police the whole world, so it's generally "one strike and you're dead."
I should note that these laws only apply to humans, against humans- wizards can burn up fairies all day.
Now. Like I said, more or less everything seems to exist, but here are some major factions the books have seen-
Vampires. Divided into the Anne Rice-esque White Court (succubi and incubi who feed on lust/fear/despair), the Dracula-esque Black Court (very powerful, look like corpses) and the bloodthirsty monster-esque Red Court. (There's also apparently an Asian Jade Court, but dunno about them.
There are the sidhe/fey folk/fairies. Divided into Winter, Summer, and Wyldfae. Both sides are equally dangerous (very), have various soldiers and Queens, and each has one mortal Knight, who is a vessel infused with a bunch of physical power.
There are the Denarians- 30 fallen angels, sealed into the 30 pieces of silver given to Judas. If you touch a coin, you get a super-powerful tempter stuck in your brain, offering you untold power... in exchange for your SOUL! (Well, it's more subtle than that. But still, that's the idea.)
There are black wizards. They might just be on their own, or they might be in a group.
There are various monsters. Like I said, monsters tend to stay quiet, so if we do have something like a loup-garou (super werewolf), or a skinwalker (semi-divine horror), or mold demons, then they're probably here at the behest of someone else.
