But yeah, the maps commonly identify Finland as being on the Scandnavian Peninsula, and if you ask someone to identify the culture that includes Sweden, Norway, and Denmark but not Finland they will probably say "Viking". At least in my neck of the woods, and I'd guess the US, I've no idea if the confusion elsewhere roots to the same thing. For the US anyway, especially once you get away from the original Northeast areas, the country is very rectangular with standardized sub divisions and borders that never have shifted, I'm actually fairly sure that's why the not-entirely unjustified stereotype about poor American geographical skills originates.I remember a similar one "State Holiday: Idaho mentioned without reference to potatoes". Ohio itself shares with Kansas a tendency to be mentioned as origin point for the person on the back of the proverbial the turnip wagon, though corn for the latter of course. In Northeast Ohio after the Steel industry petered out there was the joke that without it we'd have to fallback on our other three major exports "Starry eyed youths, cults, and serial killers". Ohio does get mentioned a lot but mostly as the capital of dull normality. "Ohio, Birth place of flight and aviation, because the place is so dull people are willing to jump off cliffs in hopes of having a good time"
