And besides, wouldn't (in-story) the Assessin's Guild be involved?

Not necessarily, only legal murders are carried out by the assasins guild. And the fact that the victim was brandished makes me suspect this might have been an illegal murder.

The whole point of the guilds is to keep to a "socially acceptable crime rate", with anything above that being punished in taxes by the Patrician. So, if this is an illegal murder, they'll definately want to get involved.
Although I do agree that the brandished mark is not a mark of a gentleman. Tsk.
