Modern people don't understand the domestic combat opportunities avialable then, and assume you need to be a foreign combat veteran in order to be a badass. There might also be some notion about needing to pay your dues to king and country before you can rightfully take up arms for your own reasons, and of course, what filmmaker can resist the chance to draw Vietnam & Iraq parallels.

It seems to boil down to you saying he has to go on a ten year crusade to show he is tough and to explain how he gets back to England from France they need to create a 12th Century D-Day. It is depressing that you are making Costner's version sound like a logical, well made film:P
