But I am also trying to figure the when of the sideways. It seems as if it as LONG after everything on the island is resolved, since Hurley and Ben were talking about there time as Number 1 and Number 2.

And why did everyone but Jack understand why they were there once they remembered the island, but he didn't?

.....as in, the last 10 minutes.

I assume all the island stuff was "real" and it turned out good.....i.e., Flocke dead, the light was re-released, Hurley and Ben are protecting the island, etc.

So what was the side-universe? Was it just Jack's afterlife.....or everyone afterlife and the story of them coming together for one last time?

Desmond, in the crash with Charlie, realized what was going on and spent his time getting everyone else to realize the 'life' they had. Some people, like Hurly, were able to have that realization without Desmond's help.
