Lost: The Outrigger Canoe gunfight *spoilers* Cannoli Send a noteboard - 28/05/2010 12:17:34 AM
With all the articles on the internet in the wake of the end, I have noticed more than a few while listing (or fuming about) the "unsolved" mysteries of the show, several have included the outrigger canoe shootout in the rain involving Sawyer, Juliet & the helicopter folks when they were skipping through time (I don't recall if Locke and/or Jin were with them yet/still). Now, although the other side of that fight was never explicitly shown, I had assumed somehow that it was Ilana & her crew taking the outrigger from Hydra Island where the Ajira plane landed (the Ajira bottles they found in the canoes before setting out were a hint, IMO) to the main island to catch up with the Others by Jacob's statue. They were shooting because, like all of Jacob's minions, they assume that being the good guys, everyone else is bad and deserves to get shot by default, or else were POed that Sawyer & co took one of "their" canoes. However, I am not sure how the logistics of that would work out in the context of what we have seen of their trek to the statue. Was their crossing ever shown in a way that would rule them out of the suspects for the outrigger fight?

The alternate explanation that occurred to me at the time, and which I forgot for some reason, is that it was the French people. They seem to have picked up Jin on a similar night, the implication was that the whole group of 815ers and helicopter people moved at the same time regardless of where they happened to be, so maybe when they skipped to the time of the storm, it was the time in the late 80s when Rousseau & co came to the island, and they shot at them because they're French & inherently dickish.
Either way, does anyone recall any evidence for or against either scenario? I ask only because I never saw this as a big mystery, but a few critics whose job is to analyse shows do.
