I don't think Jacob actually told the Others anything. Ben seemed to be faking orders from Jacob most of the time just to hold onto his leadership role. I think Jacob just let things play out on their own. Ilana seems to have been the only one told who the candidates might be.
IIRC, Pickett was talking about Sawyer, and at another time during that period, someone said the same thing about Jack. Ironically, they were two of the last three on the only real list we know Jacob made.
