The thinking being that occasionally taking a year out will help keep the show fresh. The show proper will return under the new management of Stephen Moffat in 2010, RTD has been making a few special episodes this year to finish off his run. These are The Next Doctor (good), Planet of Death (awful), The Waters of Mars (not aired yet) and two more following that.
