Especially the sword master in the dotted shirt. And Toshiro Mifune. And Takashi Shimura, the leader. He is lovely.

Yes, the characters were really well done, and it has an excellent combination of serious subject matter and humor. Mifune's character annoyed me at first, but then ended up being one of my faves.
