Because the reaction I saw was a fairly unanimous "this is violence porn and really rather creepy". An impression further confirmed by his subsequent movie about Aztecs of which I can't be bothered to look up the name.


Most people I know have actual opinions, not NY Times reviews grafted onto their personality. Or did it make so much money from people dropping in to sneer at torture porn? The general reaction of most people I know (the working class variety - I am not personally aquainted with anyone who posts on message boards) was nothing like that. That reaction cut across all sorts of demographic lines as well, including all sorts of non-religious people who make Gibson's public sex life seem monastic.
