I realize that sequels have lost their favor in recent years, and that's probably a good thing. It seems like the 80's and 90's were loaded with sequels and trilogies. I don't seem to notice them happening as frequently now, but I am not an avid movie watcher in my old age. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
If you could please list any sequels that were equal to or better than the first released film. What prompted this survey? For some strange reason, probably the godawful heat, I woke up thinking of Airplane 2 quotes. I thought that sequel was just as good as the first movie. Rocky? Naked Gun? Lethal Weapon? Jaws? Nightmare on Elm Street? Harry Potter doesn't count. Nor does the Lord of the Rings trilogy, or any other where we knew there would be films that followed.

Good grief.

Oh, how simply grand it is to be travelling by dirigible again. Direct us to the west good sir, tonight we will remember what it is to live.

I loved Airplane, but part 2 was like a remake with the same jokes

I would disqualify it due to it being part of a planned trilogy

Maybe Lucas wanted a trilogy, but the original Star Wars was pretty standalone as presented.
