The idea of vampires in Louisiana was pretty solidly established like a decade before that (ie: Anne "I'm a Crazy Fundy Christian Now" Rice). Wonder where Harris was inspired...

... Charlaine Harris (True Blood) wrote her first Sookie book almost a decade before Stephanie Meyer wrote Twilight, so you can get an idea who came first.

See, that's the thing -- Harris gives many a tongue-in-cheek nod to Anne Rice. And obviously vampires were not original at all even when Rice began writing about them. But Harris was the first to do a romance novel/chick lit interpretation, and had some originality in her humor and approach. But the twilight books/movies are so derivative it makes me cringe, even being aware I'm in an overpopulated genre that's played out to begin with.
