I suspect that's what Nolan wanted to encourage, though, with the ambiguous ending. It just doesn't work for me. Not after just one viewing, at least.

To me, there's a thin line between over-ambiguous storytelling and simply allowing to the viewers to decide for themselves. This seems to walk that line well, having a somewhat straightforward explanation while hinting at more.

In the end, if we're meant to go by what makes the most sense and "feels right," I choose the non-limbo one for now. (what happened, happened... and he likely wakes at the end)
The sword might be grateful to the forge fire, but never fond of it.
