I would never call him a brilliant actor but a solid dependable one. When it comes to Batman its the villains that are the characters not Bruce/Batman
It isn't the villains that make Batman, but instead "the trials of the times," the villains are of course related but Batman is only truly epic and memorable when faced not just with an adversary, but an encounter he has to overcome, a challenge that either grips him, other people the reader cares about, or the entire city.
No one remembers when the Joker kidnaps Gordon and shoots some random people. Everyone remembers when the (the rest of the post is spoilers from "The Killing Joke" so exit if you don't want to know).
In the Killing Joke, everyone remembers Joker shoots the Commissioner daughter Barbara Gordon (which the reader knows as the secret identity of batgirl) and the Joker drag Gordon down to his amusement park, trying to break Gordon, trying to show Batman all it takes 1 bad day to separate the sane from the insane. Joker had 1 bad day, Batman had 1 bad day, and Joker was trying to prove that it only takes 1 bad day to create another monster.
