That's a lot of Asian movies... Legolas Send a noteboard - 01/09/2010 11:54:59 AM
I guess it makes sense that as a European I've seen and intend to see more European movies, relative to Asian movies.

L: 91 Goodbye Lenin (Germany)

You'd like that one, I'm fairly sure.
L: 86 Run Lola Run (Germany)

This one I found a bit overrated, because there isn't much of a story to it, even if the concept is original and the shooting style and sound and all is quite special.
L: 34 Waltz With Bashir (Israel)

As the Empire site said, great movie, but not light fare. Should be almost compulsory for anyone interested in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, though, particularly for all those people here in Europe who have ridiculous and unattainable expectations of Israel.
L: 25 Das Boot (Germany)

Fantastic movie, that one. I don't think there's any other movie that shows as clearly how bad life on a submarine can get.
L: 20 Y Tu Mamá También (Mexico)

Fair warning, that one has nudity. Quite a lot of it, in fact.
And, I can't count, but whatever. Also, that's not to say I won't watch others, just that I hadn't previously heard of or felt the need to see them.

Of the ones I've seen that you didn't mention, I'd recommend Jean de Florette/Manon des Sources (rather tragic story about farmers in the French Provence - I love it, but then I'm a sucker for tragedies), and La Belle et la Bête (= Beauty and the Beast, but then in a live acted French-spoken version, quite gothic and dark). Oh, and of course City of God, that one most of all. The contrast between the bright colours, sunny setting and general vacation vibe on the one hand, and the merciless drug wars and children running around with guns on the other is really well done. Superb movie, if obviously not a very cheerful one either.

Edit: and Persepolis. Though you could just read the graphic novel, it doesn't make much of a difference whether you read it or watch the animated version. Voice-acting is good, but so's the writing in the graphic novel.
