I have been meaning to see this. But I have received very contradictory assessments of it, so I put it aside.
The consensus in this thread at least seems fairly negative.
98 Ran (Japan)
Well, Kurosawa is good. And I own the film.
Would you believe I've never actually seen any Kurosawa? I know, I know, it's bad.
60 Jean de Florette / Manon des Sources duology(France)
Yes. I've seen it, but I never fell in love with it. Maybe I was too young.
I love it. But then I like tragedies. And Daniel Auteuil. The first I saw the story was in play format, and that was awesome, perhaps that has something to do with it as well.
Indeed. I haven't seen the film yet. I was going to and then I forgot.
You really should.
54 Festen (Denmark)
I have been meaning to see this one.
It's, yeah, a good movie. A lot of "ick" factors, though. Not on screen (much), but some of the family secrets that surface on the birthday party are ugly indeed.
15 Let the Right One In (Sweden)
Haven't seen it.
Me neither, but I want to.
8 The Seventh Seal (Sweden)
Swedes

Great movie though.
I've only seen 14, which means I should probably not comment, but I miss some films. There was a Czech/Russian film called "Kolya" or some such a few years ago that was very lovely. And the italian The Postman is more of a favourite of mine than Cinema Paradiso. That may just be me, though. I am of course mortally offended that there are two Swedish and two Danish films and not a single Norwegian one in the mix, but since I haven't seen three of those listed I should probably keep my complaining to a minimum.
There's at least three Swedish ones, I think, two Bergmans and the recent vampire one, and yeah, one each by Von Trier and Vintenberg for Denmark. I must admit I'd be hard-pressed to name any Norwegian actor or director, off the top of my head... so maybe not a big surprise.
Haven't seen those you named, but it's true that Il Postino is famous.
I was a little surprised to not see "Un Homme et une femme" on the list. But that may just be my skewed worldview. And the Japanese "When the last sword is drawn", as well as (as Snoop pointed out) Zatoichi.
*lol* You have a skewed worldview?

As for my quibbles with the list...

Since it's "World Cinema," does that automatically exclude U.S. films? *NM*

Not only that, it also seems to exclude British, Australian and other English-language ones.

No one minds Australia's exclusion. All they make is bad Jackie Chan films. *NM*

I'm quite surprised to see that La Vita e bella (Life is Beautiful) isn't on the list. *NM*

In fairness, Roberto Benigni being an overrated ass doesn't mean his only good film isn't good.
