You could only display nerd potential in academic-related pursuits. Geek potential is displayed in an unhealthy obsession with escapist hobbies. It's a safe bet you wouldn't be here if you didn't have some level of geekiness, but yes, to show just how far gone you are you'd have to go to something like that.
They've become practically synonymous in the vernacular. For what's it worth though, I am a nerd as well as a geek.
