I'm a devout fan as well, but the 3D only has turned me away from this 3rd sequel. I'll wait for dvd *NM* Bookwyrm Send a noteboard - 10/09/2010 08:55:40 PM
While I have long been suspecting as much, I only confirmed just now that the Resident Evil is exclusively 3-D. I know they are doing all this crap to get those extra $3 for the glasses (except not mine, and I speak as a devout fan of the franchise, having seen all three previous films in both theatrical release and home video), but why the hell does everyone go see this stuff? What is the appeal, the draw? When given a choice of which version to see, I have never chosen the latter, and I cannot see how the occasional obnoxiously gratuitous shot of objects projecting towards the screen makes the movie-watching experience any more enjoyable. Not only that, but in the one 3-D trailer I saw for RE3D (courtesy of arriving at the theater to discover there was no other showing of Pirhana), it looked three-dimensional only in the sense that the carboard display in the lobby was three dimensional - it looked like a shot of flat images with space between them. It did not look like Milla Jovovich was dodging giant hammers and fighting Tig from Sons of Anarchy in three dimensions, it looked like a flat image of Milla Jovovich spaced a bit in front of a flat image of Tig & his flappy coat. True three dimensional images are one thing, two dimensional images are another thing, but two-dimensional images stacked to pretend they are in three dimensions is a sh!t-or-get-off-the-pot nuisance.

All anyone complains about is the inferior quality of 3D effects and shooting, so who is going to see this crap in sufficient numbers to convince people this is a good idea, particularly making the movies in 3D from the beginning as seems to have been done with RE3D & Pirhana (as opposed to Clash of the Titans, et al, which people were claiming was shot normally, with the 3D effects slapped on at the last moment due to the success Avatar & other 3D films).

I am also wondering what the plans are for these 3D-only films on home video. It is my understanding that most movies of their ilk make a significant proportion of their money on video sales. Are they going to sacrifice that money making videos exclusively for the much more limited home 3D market? Or are they just going to release the as regular films, the way they have done other films that were 3D in theaters, like Avatar and My Bloody Valentine (the difference with those films being the 3D was an OPTION. I know this because I specifically choose otherwise), and thus proving that they COULD have released them as normal movies, but chose to be dicks about it instead?

Is there anyone out there who actually prefers 3D and sees it as a draw, rather than a novelty at best? The current run of this ghastly trend has been going for about two years now, and the practice of asking patrons to pay extra money for an inferior viewing experience is getting annoying.
BOHICA - Go ahead, ask me what it means.
