One or two side plots is fine but it is better if they can be tied back into the main plot somehow. They had more side plot than main plot and almost none of tide together. At its core this is a drama and drama need compelling story lines not just and endless parade of oddballs and misfits. The Sam story was so unconnected it is more like a spin off then forgot to spin off.
