I think that what I can't see is scarier. Once they actually take a physical form it ceases to work.

A real person that was obviously evil and seemingly unstoppable would be scarier to me. I am somehow offended by the idea that monsters = ugly. Or that evil = ugly. So when someone tries to manipulate my feelings by portraying somthing evil as ugly it distracts me from being properly frightened because I am too busy being incensed.
