A real person that was obviously evil and seemingly unstoppable would be scarier to me. I am somehow offended by the idea that monsters = ugly. Or that evil = ugly. So when someone tries to manipulate my feelings by portraying somthing evil as ugly it distracts me from being properly frightened because I am too busy being incensed.


That reminds me of a story Kris (Choedan'Kal -- where did he go, anyway?) wrote, which had "monsters" -- classically ugly and scary creatures -- as the good helpers of the hero.
