They explained why he picked up the gun. He thought the killer had come back and he wanted to protect himself.

Right, and that part was fine. They needed a big opener, and I get it. And we all know the character is silly and child-like, but he kept doing things that weren't remotely sensible (touching items in crime scene and then going to another location w/o calling), which was going a little too far. Anyway, that's just how it felt to me.
