Why are they involving my favourites in this atrocity?
It's because they want you to see these films. I mean you wouldn't want to disappoint them would you? 
Well, to be fair, Freeman is a much better actor than Elijah Wood, which is bound to raise the quality. But anyone willing to make a film with Peter Jackson needs to have their head examined. Also, aren't they undermining the strike of the actors in NZ?
