How can you not have seen Singing In The Rain? You should watch it tonight Mark Send a noteboard - 28/10/2010 03:36:29 PM
Citizen Kane

This is a great film but I feel suffers from it's reputation as the best film of all time. The first time when I saw it I was somewhat underwhelmed, but when I saw it for the second time I really loved it since the expectation was gone.

It's impact is slightly lessened nowadays as several of the techniques it used while revolutionary at the time are now commonplace.

Lawrence of Arabia

A truly magnificent looking film with an absolutely gorgeous Peter O'Toole. It is a long film which doesn't feel the need to hurry it's pace but it is something which you should put some time by to watch.

The Graduate

Good if slightly overrated film. Get around to it sometime in the future is my suggestion.

On the Waterfront

Worth watching, but more famous for that one particular brilliant scene

Singin' in the Rain

Sacrilege Darling! This is the Golden Age MGM musical. I'm now humming several of it's best pieces in my head. Most of the songs used in this film had already featured in other MGM musicals. It also contains by far the greatest song and dance number in movie musical history.

Fun fact: at several points were Debbie Reynolds character is meant to be dubbing Jean Hagen's character, Jean Hagen is actually dubbing Debbie Reynolds.

Not so fun fact: Gene Kelly was so horrible and demanding to Debbie Reynolds about her dancing that she regularly broke down in tears. Once when Reynolds once when crying beneath a piano Fred Astaire found her and on finding out what was wrong helped her work on her dancing.

Sunset Boulevard (?)

Very much a Hollywood film, but very much worth watching

The Bridge on the River Kwai

Not my favourite film of all time, still worth a watch but I wouldn't put it at the top of the list.

The Grapes of Wrath

I've never seen it either.

The Maltese Falcon

There is nothing I love more than watching Film Noir and Bogey films late at night beside a glowing fire, with a glass of red wine in one hand, as I eat all the strawberry sweets out of the Quality Street tin with the other. It's a Christmas tradition for me. I highly recommend it.

Raging Bull

Really good, but I would have it further down the list.

Bonnie and Clyde

Tis super

Apocalypse Now

The film that made me realise that cinema can be art.

Annie Hall

A great date movie, the scene where the voiceover is translating what they are saying is brilliant

if I get unlazy, I'll share more later.
