I think he will show up later on when Rick Grimes and his "team" stop in Georgia along the way to DC. Or it could be a different city/town than the one in the comics. Anyways, they will eventually meet some insane guy calling himself the Governor who rules his group like a gangster. He tortures Rick and cuts off one of his hands. I think this will be where Merle (the neonazi hick) will get his revenge and do the hand cutting.
IMDB has him a a recurring character. I've been watching and I love it. My wife and I watch it every week. I just wish this season was longer than just six episodes. This is definitely something that I will be looking forward to at the start of it's next season.
