That the actual american readership of AGOT is somewhere in the hundreds of thousands, which isn't all that large.... So majority of the audience of the show (if the series is successful) are going to be people who have never read the books.

If people want to find out more about the series, they certainly can. But I think it's good that they're being careful about spoilers.
