The fan boys are the ones that want to bring in chracters that shouldn't be there simply because they LOVE him so much they have to have more. And by him I mean Eljah Wood not Frodo. ScFi is infested with fan boys (and fan girls) that is why shows like Star Gate Atlantis have about 80% of their cast actors from other scfi shows. These actors don't have anu special scfi skills they just have loyal fans.
Finally: Serkis, McKellen and Wood officially on board for The Hobbit.
