I'm not crazy about the idea of a fake wolf either ... but as time goes on they get bigger and become involved in more action scenes, including Grey Wind fighting in battle and Ghost intimidating anyone who looks at him funny.
Though that was the only one I've ever seen (in the episode with Queen Victoria when Torchwood was founded). Every other CGI wolf I've seen has been somewhat unconvincing.
But I don't think they have much choice. If they go on the way they have, they might as well have just dropped the direwolves altogether.
