I agree with the thrust of your argument. My listing of books-per-season is very rough and doesn't take into account the timeline issues, which would mean that events from CoT would happen during WH and some from ToM during TGS etc.
The recurring cast issue is a notable one. LOST, BSG, HEROES and other shows had notably large secondary casts who would recur regularly (and THRONES will have as well) but not be in every single episode. To what degree this would be a bigger problem on LOST isn't clear without counting the characters, but I don't think it's insurmountably larger.
