The story line that is being used (Thor sent to Midgard as punishment, Romance with Jane Foster) is from the 70's. The other aspects of the film that confused you are also unique to the Marvelverse. There is 40+ years of backstory, some of which confirms to mythology you know, and other parts that were created by Marvel writers.
