So maybe your friend is right and it's legal there. It's not legal for most of Europe, though. The chances of a single person getting caught if they stay connected only for the time they need to get the file is somewhat minimal, of course.
The risk of getting viruses through torrents entirely depends on your sources. If you just google "Show X episode Y torrent", it's not gonna take you anywhere reliable anyhow.
