Both climaxes make perfect sense in the books, but both would be visually underwhelming and would not satisify movie crowds.
Good decision to change.....and I had no doubt that was what they were going to do.
the movie version of the battle was better in quite a few ways. I didn't want them to have a dialogue in the great hall for 5 mins and then cast one spell at each other. But I did Voldemort to be killed in front of everyone. I'm not sure exactly how I think it should have been done, but perhaps when Harry and Voldy went smoke-monster, they could have crashed through the Great Hall and had their fight there. Or there could have been people fighting in the courtyard (which in the movie is right by the Great Hall) and they halt what they're doing when they notice what's going on.
I thought about that all last night, and even had a moment where I was sure they would blast into the Great Hall. It just seemed so disjointed, and that harry/ron/hermione were separate from everyone else. I didn't get that from the books; everyone seemed like they were part of Something Bigger.

I certainly think you're in the majority, re: 7.1 being easily the best movie in the series. *NM*

The books are more coherent, more humourous, and more complex, to sum it up.

What? Goblet of Fire was my favorite by far until Deathly Hallows 1 came out. *NM*
