and I just can't forgive that." -- My brother, somewhat tongue-in-cheek.

I seem to know a lot of people who don't like Doctor Who. My brother has only seen a handful of episodes, and claims to be very unimpressed by just about everything in the show (he has specifically mentioned the editing, dialogue, special effects, line delivery, and the Daleks, of course). He studied film in college and worked in the film industry for a while, and I feel that some of his gripes are legitimate. I had a hard time at first overcoming some issues when I first started watching the new series, and only continued past the first episode because of encouragement from some of my fellow Rafonauts. It wasn't until I started actually liking the characters that I started liking the show.

An acquaintance of mine recently wrote, "In my opinion, "Dr. Who" is the "Eragon" of science fiction." He later clarified, saying "Both Eragon and Doctor Who are fantasy/science fiction stories for those who haven't seen or read much of the amazing things the genres can offer." Now, ignoring the fact that he is comparing the longest-running science fiction television series to a derivative-bordering-on-plagiarism book, does this statement have any basis in reality? I've seen some elements of Jules Verne and Isaac Asimov in Doctor Who, but for the most part I've found it quite original in subject matter.

Maybe I just haven't seen or read much of the amazing things the genre has to offer.

P.S. The "NSSP" is implied.

Of course, [Quixote] carried it a bit too far. He thought that every windmill was a giant. That's insane. But, thinking that they might be...

I can't take Dr. Who seriously, and I think that's why I've never cared for it. *NM* - 20/11/2011 02:56:19 PM 137 Views
When did it ever attempt to be serious? *NM* - 20/11/2011 05:32:33 PM 113 Views
