When the barn opened and they started coming out, I kinda saw it coming. I was hoping they wouldn't do it, but as evil as the show is, it was the only shocker left for this storyline. I also have to assume Hershel knew.
According to a sneak previews of the coming second half of the season, Hershel and Maggie are both adamant that they had no idea that Sophia was in there and that Otis is the one who used to do all the walker wrangling, so he might have found Sophia before he died.
