However, you are correct that you can differentiate between plot and storytelling, and if you're talking about pure storytelling style with no regard to the plot behind it, then yeah, that was fairly well done. As I said, I liked the movie quite a bit. I'm a fan. But damn, I could use a sturdier plot.
I am not disagreeing with the plot could be much better.
Yet I believed the Star Trek reboot is a good movie, and a good reboot movie.
While there are problems with the plot/plotholes things the movie did right.
1) Good actors with some memorable lines and believable performances
2) Good rhythm to the story with a nice flair to the storytelling. It did get a little too slow with the hoth/spot prime bit, but it succeeded better than most movies
3) Great music that enhanced the movie
Yes the plot could have been more tight, but in my mind it was a very good movie. Lastly with literature let alone sci-fi and fantasy I believe you can do a suspension of belief and for the most part ignore some blarring plot holes such as eagles dropping off Frodo to Mt. Doom, to use a fantasy example.
