Personally, I've been burned a couple times on "oh my god, this anime film is genius and everyone has to watch it." There was a period there were people were boasting of a "cinematic masterpiece" in anime once per year, and some of them fell quite short of that.
There is just something about their dialogs, characters, plots and storytelling I can't get into. Minus a couple of really great films like Chihiro and Mononoke.
