Don't the movies usually screw up the comics? I did not read the Avengers, but I read League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Watchmen, and those movies not were inferior, but in the case of the former, sucked really hard and were grossly unfaithful to the source material. Kind of like Van Helsing. Teaming up heroes or other seperate characters "just because" doesn't work in Hollywood. Or rather, they make a lot of money on hype and undiscerning kids and then the foreign markets, where the dialogue and characterization don't matter. If movies can fail with widely known characters like Dr. Jekyll, Dracula, Captain Nemo, etc. how much worse will they do with characters who are much more of a niche fandom?
I followed the comics for less than a decade back then, so either I wouldn't notice small changes or wouldn't mind them. I always preferred ensemble pieces over lone heroes (Star Wars, LOTR, all have multiple heroes working together, fighting in different locations etc.) so this really is what I've been waiting for ever since they started digging their nails into the Marvel universe. The fact that the majority of the set up films for this group were even better than I expected raised my expectations even more. I want huge action and great chemistry between the characters and all is well.

It's not as if this movie franchise came up with the idea of teaming them up

Like I said, I never read the comics. But I'm totally fine with blaming them for the crossover

I was under the impression that several of them who are not Thor don't, in fact, have powers

Having read the comics in the 80s I've been waiting a long time for this to happen.

I had no problem with League or Watchmen. Well, not "no" problem... but not that much.
