...but I guess it adds to the humor of the moment when Rogers finally gets a reference (the flying monkeys bit).
Stephen Hawking was such a reach, the attribute I thought of was not "intellect" but "frail body, confined to a wheel chair."
It allowed for a funny, Whedon-humor moment. I got it w/o any trouble, and enjoyed the giggle about the "uh... smart guy."
I didn't have any trouble getting it. It's just that my mind went to his physical limitation before his intellect. And Einstein is almost synonymous with genius (to the point that calling someone that can even be inferred as sarcastic with the proper tone of voice... no one ever sees you fail at something and says "Way to go, Hawking"
.

I see you fail at putting quotes and parenthesis together, so I might. But my mind still goes to hawking=genius before hawking=invalid. I'll stand by this. I thought it was amusing, even though it might have stretched likelihood, slightly.
I'm pleased to report The Avengers offered both entertainment AND justification (spoilers seperated)

The Heli-Carrier is well established in the Marvel Universe as S.H.I.E.L.D.'s base of operations.

Hawkeye does basically state as much to Black Widow. They're made for a spy movie.
