The Batman role is actually split up in the Avengers. Hawkeye (who I like in the books) is a counterpart to Green Arrow, no I am not joking, he really is.
Hawkeye/Clint Barton's main role in the Avengers is for dramatic tension among the group. He is always pushing whoever is the leader of the group, he is the counterpoint to whoever is the tactician, and often a wild card in any fight.
Yes Canoli, he is not a primary "front line" fighter, but neither is a sniper, You wanna go to war without one?
