But what if Coulson doesn't stay dead? You have to figure they've got some nice med tech on the Hellicarrier, and some fans online have presented the idea that they make Agent Coulson the classic Avenger "Vision" for Avengers 2.
I didn't know much about the android, but a quick check of wikipedia shows that he's based on tech indirectly from Pym/Ant Man, and what movie is currently in pre-production still? Ant Man.

Pym created the (oops) villainous robot Ultron, which in turn created the Vision, a synthezoid whose emotional intelligence was based on the brain wave patterns of the once and occasionally dead Simon Williams (Wonder Man). The Avengers turned Vision against Ultron and Vision became a hero and member of the Avengers.
Bringing Coulson back from the dead would be dumb. But I could allow for Coulson's psyche profile to be used in programming the Vision (instead of Simon Williams) as it would make him more likely to be accepted by the rest of the group (from the viewpoint of his creator/creators).
The question then would be whether to introduce Ultron in Avengers 2 and Vision in Avengers 3, or skip the Ultron step all together and go straight to SHIELD designing Vision themselves in Avengers 2.
I'm pleased to report The Avengers offered both entertainment AND justification (spoilers seperated)

The Heli-Carrier is well established in the Marvel Universe as S.H.I.E.L.D.'s base of operations.

Yup, they couldn't get away with not having the Heli-Carrier.

Hawkeye does basically state as much to Black Widow. They're made for a spy movie.
