If I remember the books, Wildfire was basically just. . .well, fire. It burned hot, was hard to put out, spread easily, etc. The chain was needed so the fire could jump from ship to ship. In the show's version, though, the wildfire exploded. The ships were wiped out immediately, rather than via an ongoing conflagration.
