Here is the canon of the movies, endorsed by Lucas:
"Bringing balance to the Force" means that evil is destroyed. There's no subjectivity, Jedi and Sith aren't just two different philosophies, there's no "balance of good and evil."
The Force is supposed to be Light Side. Darth Vader "brought balance to the Force" by killing the Emperor.
___
Which really annoys me, because there are tons of cool theories and analyses, interpretations and all the rest of it of the Force and the SW universe. But what I said above, as far as Lucas is concerned, is the entirety of it.

Again I ask for a link where he has said this I haven't been able to find one. The starwars insider 74 where wookipedia sent me doesn't seem to exist..

I was under the impression it was widely accepted that Anakin brought balance to the force...

Actually, the most recent book revealed a solid answer to the prophecy.

Is that really as canon as the movies?

As canon as Han saying the Death Star was too big to be a space station...

There are certainly some inconsistencies, but very few outright contradictions.

"Balance to the Force" is a numbers game. The key is in a comment by Yoda at the end of Ep. 1.

But Obi Wan said Anakin was prophecied to destroy the Sith "not join them!" And he did. Eventually. *NM*

Technically, going strictly by the films, that could have been supposition rather than quotation. *NM*

Not ideal maybe, but more an organization of people than a nation of people.
