View original postThe libretto, shall we say, is so damn terrible that I want to vomit when I hear the songs. Also, aside from a couple of songs (that fat English pustule woman sings one of the better ones), the musical effort is a failed one as well. If I were to rate modern musicals by how well written the songs are, I think Phantom of the Opera is leagues above Les Miserables in the quality of the score.
considering how much I love Phantom of the Opera and how often I've heard all the songs, it was never a fair comparison, with me hearing the Miserables songs for the first time (okay, except I Dreamed a Dream). Definitely wouldn't surprise me if that impression remained valid on closer acquaintance as well, though.
Fat English pustule woman? Intriguing description, but I have no idea who you're talking about.
View original postHugo's novel wasn't exactly the best written, but I felt it had depth and a meaningful message that gets lost in cheap lyrics meant for the proles and totally forgettable music.
Yeah, that seems quite likely.

Funny to see the two possible reactions from fans in successive posts like that.

I take it you're too fond of the book to see it disgraced so in the musical version.

I think it's more the trashy nature of the songs makes it impossible to watch.
