But it was there in the background all the way through. Didn't you read the newspaper cuttings?

And the whole reason why the Dr Manhattan version is not as good is because it is too neat. Watchmen subverts neat endings. That was my point.


Also, I fail to see how the change we got affects the tone, theme or social commentary of the content.

And yes, I did read the cuttings, but to me the squid feels like this weird tangent that doesn't connect easily to the main plot. Much like the pirate comic pieces, which are IMO the weakest part of the story.

Besides, it's a long long leap from kidnapped creatives to giant squid and there's no indication that's where it's headed so I still see it as out of nowhere.
