I was hoping he could be a bit of an ambiguous bad guy with partially good parts and intentions. Now that this whole "gather mutants to become super powerful" came up, I fear that's out of the window. His ultimate goal seems to be power, the old villain stereotype. I am little disappointed in this, because I could respect the "wants to protect his people" attitude he first seemed to have.

I don't see any reason to see he isn't doing what he is doing partly out of a need to protect his own kind. I think he began his "quest" as a power hungry mutant, but eventually realized that power alone will not help him unless he has allies and friends to look out for him and each other. This is opposite to Sylar's mentality; survival of the fittest and a psychotic killing/feeding urge.

Samuel = Magneto, Carnival = Brotherhood of Semi-Evil Mutants
Sylar = Emplate (a mutant vampire who feeds off mutant bone marrow and copies their power)
BOHICA - Go ahead, ask me what it means.
