Disney owns a lot of crap including ABC with their racy primetime shows with all kinds of un-family values. They own ESPN and have their hand in the sports market. as Ironclad pointed out, they own Miramax which makes adult movies.

The move by Disney is an investment. The comic industry was a dying industry before the slew of comic book based movies came out and revived interest in the last decade. Smart financial move on Disney's part. I highly doubt they want to do micro-managing of comic book plots or characters.
But wine was the great assassin of both tradition and propriety...
